How We Reviewed

We looked at the best items available on Amazon and looked for more information on the products through online reviews, customer reviews, and buying guides.

How to Choose the Best Product for Your Needs

Below is a list of different types of washers. Read through this list and think about what will best suit your needs.

Types of Washing Machines

  • Front Loading – Washing machines that are loaded from the front. They often have many spin options, can handle large loads, are energy efficient, and often are stackable with the dryer.
  • Top Loading – Washing machines that load from the top, they have simpler interfaces, are easier to repair and less expensive. If you are interested in such an option, there are many to choose from.
  • Washer/Dryer Combo – a single unit that can wash and dry clothes. This review mentions several.
  • High Efficiency – These machines use less water, detergent, and electricity. They are usually marked as high efficiency with an “HE” symbol or may receive an energy star, which also indicates energy efficiency. This review contains several high-efficiency machines.
  • Steam – These washers use steam to soften, sterilize, or remove hard wrinkles. By heating and moisturizing the clothes, the fabrics soften allowing for a more penetrating cleanse. Some of the machines discussed are steam washers.
  • Compact – These are smaller washers. They are useful if your washer hookups are in a tighter space. Some of the machines in this review are compact washers.
  • Smart – these washers can be enabled over wifi and controlled by a smartphone.
    Portable – small transportable washers

What type of machine or features are you looking for? Do you need to fit your machine into a tight place? Do you want to get a washer that is energy efficient? Is money an issue?

Think about these questions as you read through this best washer list.

Our List of the Best Front Loading Washing Machines

1. Best Front Loading Washer/Dryer Combo: Splendide WD2100XC Vented Combo

Splendide WD2100XC White Vented Combo Washer/Dryer
  • Max Spin: 1200 RPM; Cycle: 10 wash/3 dry
  • Max Wash Capacity: 15 lbs.; Max Dry Capacity: 11 lbs.
  • Super-silent technology
  • Built-tough for RV and Marine use
  • Dimensions: 33-1/8" Height x 23-1/2" Width x 22-5/8" Depth

While the price tag is much more than your typical washer, as a dual system, you may save money in the long run by not needing to purchase and maintain a dryer as well.

Washers tend to be heavy, but this one, unfortunately, has no good handholds. Be prepared to handle it with several people if necessary. It’s around 150 pounds, which is pretty standard for washing machines.

As a washer/dryer combo, splendide.com claims that they built the washer for RV and Marine use. (Not sure about you, but imagining a bunch of marines doing laundry makes me chuckle). Regardless, it does speak to the quality of this machine.

With a 23 inch width it is small and can fit in tight spots. There are many washing and drying settings and it may take time to understand them. Be prepared to look through the manual, so you can make the most of the machine’s capabilities.

Some reported issues with wrinkles, several solutions include using softener to prevent wrinkling or fluffing the clothes between wash and drying cycles. All in all, the feedback to this machine was overwhelmingly positive, which is why it takes the first place position.

While the price tag is much more than your typical washer, as a dual system you may save money in the long run by not needing to purchase and maintain a dryer as well.

2. Most Durable Washer: Crossover WHWF09810DC Commercial Washer

Crossover Non-Metered 120 Volts Front Load Washer 3.5 Cu. Ft....
  • Lasts nearly 3x longer than appliance type washing machines
  • Uses 60% less water and dries 15 minutes faster
  • 15,000 cycles of commercial use reliability
  • Energy Star Rated
  • ADA Compliant

This washer is built for commercial use. Crossover claims that it lasts three times longer than the standard washing machine. Standard washing machines are rated for 5000 cycles, while this one is rated for 15000 cycles.

If this machine lasts three times longer than your standard washing machine, then it would be similar to purchasing 3 washing machines for less than $700 each. Buying a single highly-durable machine also skips the hassle of replacing washing machines along the way.

It is extremely heavy. Standard washing machines tend to weigh in the 100-200 pound range, but this machine comes in at a whopping 314 pounds. Make sure you have a plan for moving it if you are interested in this option.

This is a great washing machine, but we didn’t think that it should take the first place position since most standard washing machine users won’t need its exceptional durability.

3. Best Washer/Dryer Pair: Electrolux EFLS627UTT 27 and EFME627UTT

What makes this washing machine stand out is its stain cleaning ability.

It has a specific dispenser for pods and absorbs the plastic encasing well. The washer has a “SmartBoost” feature, which mixes the water with the soap before washing the clothes, optimizing the use of the soap. It cleans clothes exceptionally well and is regarded as one of the best washing machines for stain removal, so maybe more machines will start mimicking the SmartBoost idea.

If you have young children who like to wallow in the mud, or a spouse that works a manual labor job this machine may do the trick.

A couple of cons to mention, all washing machines must be fully level; otherwise, they can start to shake. Users of this washing machine noted that this was particularly the case with this machine.

Also, this washing machine can be loud on startup, but as it progresses through the cycle it should quiet down.

4. GE GFW450SPMDG and GFD45ESPMDG Washer/Dryer Pair

Several features make this washing machine stand out.

It has a tumble care feature that tumbles your clothes periodically for up to 8 hours when you are away from the home (or overnight). This prevents wrinkles and, according to GE, “keep[s] the clothes fresh if you are not able to move them to the dryer right away.” The process of decomposition is less efficient when oxygen is not present, and this can create bad smells in clothing. Perhaps by tumbling the clothes, it introduces oxygen into the clothing, preventing stinkiness.

It also is a steam washer, so it handles extra dirty/wrinkly clothing especially well.

The drum is stainless steel, so it won’t rust over time. Admittedly this is a feature of many modern washing machines.

The chime on the system is loud, so if your washer finishes and you are in a different room, you should be able to hear it.

The 27 inch width and 4.5 cu ft drum is large. It handles large loads well and should work well for larger households or for laundry procrastinators who like to do their laundry once a month.

5. LG WM3997HWA Combo Washer/Dryer

LG WM3997HWA Ventless 4.3 Cu. Ft. Capacity Steam Washer/Dryer...
  • 4.3 Cu. Ft. Capacity NeveRust Stainless Steel Drum
  • 14 Wash Cycles / 4 Dry Cycles / 8 Options / 5 Temperatures
  • Steam Gently But Powerfully Penetrates Fabrics
  • ColdWash Enhanced Motions Penetrate Deep Into Fabrics

This is a combo washer and dryer. To dry the clothes, it uses a ventless system. That’s right drying without a vent!

Ventless dryers pull in air, heat it, and push it into the dryer drum. The air evaporates water off of the clothes. This evaporated air is pulled back into a condenser where the water vapor condenses into water. This water is pumped into an external drain, while the air will be reheated and sent back into the drum.

Ventless dryers are popular in Europe where home sizes are generally smaller. They are more energy efficient because they don’t spew out hot humid air but, unfortunately, cost more.

They provide better fabric care. Sometimes clothes will come out damp if the load size is too large, or if the setting was wrong.

Ventless systems dry 2-3 times longer. But, since it is a two in one, there isn’t the necessity to move wet clothes from the washer to dryer. With the use of a delay timer, clothes can be placed in the machine in the evening and taken out in the morning. Set it to tumble when done with the cycle to keep wrinkles out until you pull them in the morning.

Some customers remarked that the position of the drain vastly changed dry times – from 5 hours down to 2. They suspected that the internal pump was not strong enough to drain the water which prevents humidity from leaving the machine. By draining to a floor drain, or setting the washer higher up, the customer fixed their problem.

With a 4.3 cubic feet drum this washing machine is suitable for mid-size loads.

When storing washing machines in sub-freezing temperatures, they should be winterized. Winterizing can be done either by draining the hoses/pipes of all the water or by using RV-antifreeze fluid. This washing machine has a winterize feature meant for RV use.

This is the perfect machine if you are tight on space. It is only 24 inches wide, and as a combo washer and dryer, you won’t need to purchase a dryer. It’ll fit well in an RV, apartment, or tiny home.

7. GE GFW450SSMWW Steam Washer

  • GE 4. 5CF FL Steam Washer ADA Wht

The GE GFW450SSMWW is a 27 inch washing machine with 4.5 cubic feet capacity, so it is full-sized and suited for large loads.

The best part about this machine is the price tag. It comes in cheaper than the rest listed in this review. This machine includes internal heaters to heat the water to a warmer temperature that kills off bacteria. It is an energy star qualifying product.

The steam washing feature, as mentioned before, should help with highly wrinkled, or extra dirty loads. This washer has 10 cycle options. One is the time saver cycle that cleans a full load in 37 minutes, and another is the sanitize cycle that cleans 99.9% of bacteria.

8. Westland ARWXF129WNA Compact Washer

Splendide WD2100XC White Vented Combo Washer/Dryer
  • Max Spin: 1200 RPM; Cycle: 10 wash/3 dry
  • Max Wash Capacity: 15 lbs.; Max Dry Capacity: 11 lbs.
  • Super-silent technology
  • Built-tough for RV and Marine use
  • Dimensions: 33-1/8" Height x 23-1/2" Width x 22-5/8" Depth

This is a small washer at 23 inches. It is a silent washing machine, so it could be useful if you live in an apartment and don’t want to bother your neighbors.

Admittedly this machine is not as good as some of the others on this list. Some even reported faulty electronics.

Front Load Washing Machine FAQ’s

If a front load washer is the best choice for you, here are some FAQ’s that will help you use your washing machine to its full capacity.

How do you use front load washing machines?

Once the laundry is loaded into the drum, place detergent in the detergent dispenser instead of directly into the drum like in a top loading washer.

Front load washers require less detergent than top load washers because they use less water. Select the cycle that suits your needs and hit run. The options will vary from device to device.

How long do washing machines last?

Average washing machines will last for 11 years. This usually translates to 5100 loads, but depending on the design of the machine, how often it’s used, and how it’s maintained, this could be many more or many fewer. The Crossover front load washer – listed in this review is rated for 15000 loads!

How do you clean a washing machine?

Washing machines are easy to clean; some even come with a self-cleaning feature. You can clean washing machines primarily with vinegar and hot water. Be sure to clean all parts of the machine, including the filter, dispenser, and drum.

How do you install a washing machine?

It is also not difficult to install a washing machine, particularly if you are replacing an old one. If you will place your new washing machine in a spot that does not have hookups – including a hot and cold facet and drainage – you will need to set that up beforehand.

At the very least we hope that you are aware of the types of front loading washing machines available on the market. Especially since washing machines are an investment, good research before purchasing a product can save lots of money and waste.

With the knowledge you have gained, hopefully you can make an informed purchase that will suit your needs!
